OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Stinger GT Line 2.2 CRDI

Kia Stinger

Unlike anything we’ve seen previously from Kia, the Stinger is the company’s halo model. The shapely fi ve-door fastback showcases a new type of Kia, one that’s more upmarket. Its premium looks are backed up by a rear-wheel-drive setup and the choice of a 3.3-litre petrol V6 engine, though most buyers are likely to opt for the more sensible 2.2-litre diesel producing 200hp, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Matching the car’s seductive exterior is a cabin that looks and feels equally upmarket. It doesn’t quite rival the fi nish you might see in an Audi or Mercedes-Benz, but it makes for an interesting alternative and it drives very well indeed.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Sorento 2.2 K3 4x4

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Optima K3 DCT

Kia Sorento

Not that long ago, the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe almost had the seven-seat SUV market to themselves – and they both started out as rugged 4x4s with more focus on utility than sportiness. Things have changed considerably and there are loads of options now, so the Korean brands have had to up their game. The Sorento is often forgotten, but it remains a simply massive and hugely comfortable option for a decent price. There’s not a lot of choice in the range, with three trim levels, all powered by the same 2.2-litre diesel engine. That there’s the same number of options for those buying the Sorento as a commercial vehicle speaks volumes about where this car is fi nding buyers these days.

Kia Optima

The Kia Optima has earned a healthy amount of sales over the years with buyers being enticed by its stylish looks, generous amounts of passenger space and a 510-litre boot, not to mention the seven-year Kia warranty. Our only gripe with the interior is that the high window level makes it less enjoyable for younger passengers to travel in the rear. Just the one engine is available - a 1.6-litre diesel - though it’s effi cient and the automatic transmission no longer has the high emissions of the older version, making it as cheap to tax as the manual. It may be competing in a segment that is diminishing in popularity, but we still rate the Optima highly.
