OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Mondeo 1.5 TDCi 120 Titanium
Ford Mondeo The Mondeo name has been a stalwart of the saloon market for a quarter of a century, and it remains one of the most popular models. In its current guise, it off ers a sleek design that is matched with a spacious interior and a variety of diff erent engines and versions to choose from, such as the sporty looking Mondeo ST-Line. For the more upmarket buyer, there is the Mondeo Vignale, with a leather interior and additional features to improve its refi nement, including sound insulating glass and noise-cancelling speakers. Ford more recently began selling a hybrid version of the Mondeo, which delivers fuel economy fi gures on par with a diesel – in theory anyway. It works well, but with many rivals now moving onto plug-in hybrid technology, it already feels behind the times. As saloon cars go, the Mondeo is good, though it’s not the class-leader it once was.
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE EcoSport ST-Line 1.0 manual
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Kuga ST-Line 1.5 TDCi
Ford EcoSport
There’s a vast array of choice in the compact crossover segment of the market, with virtually every brand off ering at least one model. Ford has been plugging away with the EcoSport for several years and has twice updated it to what you see today. While it still lags behind the best in the category, it is better than before and with its 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is best suited to town and city driving. The addition of a better infotainment touchscreen and some nicer materials inside help its cause, but its ungainly styling and relatively high pricing don’t help its cause much.
Ford Kuga
Of the range of SUVs that Ford produces the Kuga is the most complete package, with conservative styling and a practical design. More recently, the Kuga range has expanded to include sportier ST-Line and premium Vignale versions, the latter featuring a more powerful 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine. Inside, the cabin features tactile controls and Ford’s SYNC infotainment system that includes smartphone connectivity with features like Apple CarPlay. Good levels of rear passenger space, along with a generous boot and the option of an electrically operated tailgate, contribute to making the Kuga a suitable family SUV. It drives well on the road too, with a comfortable suspension setup and accurate steering.
