OUR PICK OF THE RANGE A5 Sportback 2.0 TDI 190 S line automatic
Audi A5 The fi rst generation A5 was a very popular car in Ireland, and this second-generation model moves the game on further with more appealing looks and an excellent interior. Whether it’s the Coupe, fi ve-door Sportback or four-seat Cabriolet, the A5 is a striking looking car, especially in the sportier S line specifi cation. Everything about the exterior seems to exude quality, from the frameless doors to the jewel-like headlights. It’s the same story inside. Like most of Audi’s models, the level of fi nish is excellent. Well-weighted switchgear and impressive ambient lighting at night go some way to justifying the price tag. The same rings true of the more practical A5 Sportback. The addition of two more doors doesn’t make it any less attractive to look at, but it’s far more accessible for rear passengers, even if it isn’t hugely spacious in the back. Where the A5 models lose ground to rivals like the BMW 4 Series is the lack of an engaging driving experience. The overriding impression is that Audi focused more on quality and comfort than excitement. However, the Audi A5 still delivers on many fronts.

Audi A6 Audi’s latest A6 is a signifi cant improvement over its predecessor. Not only is it a great looking car, but it also off ers high levels of space inside and the technology to match. The diesel-only line-up ranges from 204- to 286hp with most models featuring all-wheel drive. Every version comes with an automatic transmission as standard and they also get ‘mild- hybrid’ technology, allowing for short periods of engine-off coasting on the move to help save fuel. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder TDI option is the sweeter package to drive and its S tronic transmission is fast to react. Technology from the fl agship Audi A8 has trickled down to the A6, so the same dual-touchscreen setup dominates the centre console and it’s pleasant to use, although some will miss the rotary controller of the old model. The Avant (estate) model retains the same 565 litres of luggage room as its predecessor did, but the load space is more accessible. Still, it lags a little behind many of its rivals for overall capacity.
