Ford C-Max
Ford’s pair of compact people carriers, the C-Max and Grand C-Max, are getting long in the tooth now and we expect them to come in for replacement shortly based on the underpinnings and style of the new Ford Focus. Nonetheless, they’re decent cars. The regular C-Max is eff ectively a tall fi ve-door, fi ve-seat hatchback, though its interior is quite fl exible, while the Grand C-Max adds an extra row of seats (small seats, it must be said) and sliding side doors to make it the choice for the large family. Even if you don’t technically need those extra seats, the sliding doors and extra rear space make the bigger car the best choice. The interior style of the C-Max reveals its age and it’s a little light on the latest technology, too, but it still makes for solid family motoring.

Ford S-Max
When Ford fi rst dreamed up the S-Max concept, it was supposed to be the sporty alter-ego to the Galaxy MPV, still seating seven, but giving up some space and practicality in the name of image and driving dynamics. It has strayed from a brief a little, as the current S-Max isn’t really what you’d call sporty. It is, however, a very comfortable and civilised people carrier, perfect for large families. What’s more, it feels well made, justifying its rather high pricing. Titanium is the entry-level grade, with the sportier looking ST-Line car above and the luxury- themed Vignale topping the line-up. The only engine option is the venerable 2.0-litre diesel producing 150hp.
Ford Galaxy
Refl ecting poor demand and perhaps that this car is coming to the end of its life, there’s just a single version off ered for sale on the Irish market, the Titanium variant, powered by Ford’s 2.0 Duratorq TDCi 150hp diesel. Buyers can choose between manual and automatic gearboxes, too, and though the latter isn’t the smoothest auto around, it still suits the remit of the Galaxy – that of a large people carrier. The Galaxy really is massive inside (and out, obviously, making it tricky to park in tight spaces), and there’s a good deal of fl exibility in the seating as well. It’s comfortable and refi ned on the move and if a little dated inside in terms of design, it at least seems well put together.
