OUR PICK OF THE RANGE X7 xDrive30d
BMW X6
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE X6 xDrive40d M Sport
Think of the X6 as the BMW X5’s sporty alter-ego and you’ll be on the right track to understanding why it exists. Not all buyers of large SUVs need extra seating and a huge boot, after all. Many don’t like the brash looks of the X6, but it’s been a successful car on the global stage and, we must admit, BMW has done a good job of giving it sporting dynamics to match the appearance. As you’d hope, the X6 is only off ered with high performing engines (with as much power as 575hp in the X6M), but hold that thought, as we know that a brand-new X6, sharing the new X5’s luxurious cabin architecture, is waiting in the wings for the end of 2019.
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Z4 M40i
BMW X7
So you think the new-for-2019 BMW X5 is big? You aint seen nothing yet, as it’s about to be usurped as the X-range-topper by the mighty new X7 model. This shares a lot of its mechanicals with the X5, but is considerably bigger, meaning it’s designed to accommodate seven adults inside, in the most luxurious cabin BMW currently makes. Despite the size, its line-up of powerful petrol and diesel engines ensures it still performs well, though running costs will be high. Oh, and you need to be happy with the seriously divisive appearance of the X7’s tall front grille before you’ll even consider this over the likes of the Mercedes GLS.

Editor’s Choice
BMW Z4 Perhaps stung by criticism of its previous Z4, BMW sought to create a new sports car that could stand comparison with the leader of the segment, the Porsche 718 Boxster. And, in range-topping M40i guise, we’d suggest it has come very close in the new Z4. A focus on scalpel-sharp dynamics makes this two-seat roadster huge fun to drive, with
scintillating performance from a sonorous turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine. For those that prefer to sit back, cruise and be seen in their stylish open-topped BMW, there are less expensive petrol models - and they all come with a gorgeously minimal cabin made of top-quality materials. Shame nobody in Ireland buys soft-top cars, isn’t it?
