When Porsche decided it needed to make an SUV, it upset the sports car fans of the marque greatly, but it was a sensible, and somewhat prescient, decision from a fi nancial standpoint. That Porsche SUV pioneer, in 2003, was the Cayenne, but it was a long way from being pretty. Fast-forward to the present day and the Cayenne, now into its third generation, is actually quite a handsome machine. What it has always had, though, and which is preserved in the latest version, is one of the best chassis underpinning any SUV going. The Cayenne is not cheap and there are no diesel options for frugality, only a plug-in E-Hybrid model, but it’s a hugely desirable SUV nonetheless.

Porsche Macan
If the Cayenne set the template for what a Porsche SUV should be like, then the Macan refi ned it into one of the best SUVs in the world – certainly if handling prowess is your thing. The Macan’s slightly wieldier dimensions and reduced weight mean it has its big brother licked when it comes to driving enjoyment, while it doesn’t lose anything in terms of ride comfort or refi nement as a result. It’s not the most commodious SUV in the rear seats and, after its 2018 facelift, there are no diesel options for the Macan, but a 2.0-litre turbocharged four- cylinder engine and a powerful 3.0-litre V6 ensure this high-riding machine has all the performance chutzpah you’d expect of a true Porsche.

Porsche Panamera
A sizeable chunk of Porsche’s sales in Ireland can be attributed to the Panamera, and Porsche off ers plenty of choice within that model’s line-up. This second generation Panamera looks much nicer than before and more like the four-door 911 many see it as. Adding to that is the Sport Turismo, an estate in Porsche parlance, which is arguably the better choice of the two. For the cost-conscious business user, a plug-in hybrid makes surprising amounts of sense without sacrifi cing outright pace. If you want to hit the performance sweet spot, there’s the GTS models, assuming if you don’t fancy going the whole hog to the simply ballistic Turbo versions.
