inside nothing short of exceptional. Beneath the seductive bodywork is an all-wheel-drive transmission matched with a 3.0-litre diesel V6 engine that comes in 231- or 286hp states of tune. Like several of Audi’s top models there is also a mild hybrid system to help reduce fuel consumption, though the eff ects are small and it doesn’t power the car electrically at any point like a full hybrid. Comfort and quality, rather than outright sportiness, is the order of the day here, though the A7 can cover ground at a decent pace.

Audi’s baby of its SUV range isn’t really all that small, and it makes for an interesting alternative to an Audi A3 hatchback, for example. It’s quite an unusual looking crossover, with a highly distinctive look that may not be to all tastes. Nonetheless, there’s a wide variety of colours and wheels to give it a unique appearance, so no two need be the same. Inside, it feels more like a mildly raised up hatchback than a real SUV, but there’s more passenger space than you might expect – and some cool design features, such as the ambient lighting that illuminates bits of the cabin from behind the trim panels. The Q2 drives like a well-sorted hatch, too, meaning it suits the more powerful engines in the range. Buyers can choose from petrol or diesel, manual or automatic, and even specify quattro four-wheel drive, depending on engine.

With the arrival of the all-new Q3 SUV this year, Audi is hoping to build upon the success of the fi rst generation, which sold in high numbers. It takes a signifi cant leap forward, both in terms of design and how it performs. On the practical front, boot space see a major increase, while the rear seats can slide to benefi t legroom. The quality levels inside are as good as you’d expect to see on much more expensive cars, with items like a digital instrument display and large touchscreen serving to help future- proof it. The range of engines includes 1.5-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel. For urban driving the 1.5 TFSI is ideal, but the 2.0 TDI is the better one to drive overall, especially if you’re covering greater distances.
