Citroën C4 Cactus
The latest Citroën C4 Cactus isn’t quite as quirky looking as the fi rst-generation model, and the car has now been repositioned as a hatchback rather than a crossover with smarter looks to boot, so it’s now going up against cars like the Astra, Megane, and Focus. Stiff competition, but one of the aces up the Citroën’s sleeve is Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension. Those of a certain vintage will remember the plush ride off ered by Citroëns a few decades ago, and this is a modern take on that done to great eff ect. Diesel engines are available, but with the low weight of the C4 Cactus, the punchy petrol engines suit the car better.

Citroën Berlingo
We tend to overlook cars like the Citroën Berlingo, mostly due to them sharing so much with their van equivalents, yet these are hugely practical cars that off er tremendous levels of space and, in this instance, greater refi nement than ever before. By featuring many of the same styling cues as Citroën’s other models, the Berlingo now has more appeal and it’s hard to ignore the functional elements such as independent rear seats, sliding doors and, as we mentioned, all that space. You can also easily remove the rear seats entirely to transform it into a van when required - and there are two vehicle lengths to choose from. It doesn’t have the style of an SUV, but if you place function over form, this is the type of car you should be considering.

Citroën C4 Spacetourer/ Grand C4 Spacetourer
Just to confuse everyone, Citroën has dropped the Picasso name from its people carriers, instead adopting the ‘Spacetourer’ moniker, but changing little else in the case of the popular C4 Spacetourer and Grand C4 Spacetourer. The former seats fi ve in a fl exible and spacious cabin, with a massive boot behind, while the latter has seven seats for larger families – though the rearmost chairs are best kept for children and there’s precious little boot space with them in use. Buyers can choose from petrol or diesel power, depending on their mileage, and running costs are admirably low. These cars particularly suit families with several young children that need space for their bulky car seats.
