Mitsubishi Outlander By far the most successful model for Mitsubishi in recent years, the Outlander PHEV has received a series of updates to keep it current including refreshed looks and improvements to the plug-in hybrid version’s performance. The 2.2-litre diesel version produces a useful 150hp and comes with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. All bar the entry-level model come with seven seats, adding to the Outlander’s versatility. Due to the battery in the plug-in hybrid version, it is only available as a fi ve-seater, but its on-road performance goes some way to make up for this. A new petrol engine works better with the hybrid setup and it can travel further on battery power alone, up to 45 kilometres, making it great for short journeys between charge-ups.

Mitsubishi Lancer

We’re quite surprised that Mitsubishi Ireland still lists the Lancer for sale on its website, as it’s a very old design. In fairness, it was always an attractive car from the outside, though the cabin feels positively ancient now. Still, it also feels unbreakable and that’s probably one of the most appealing things about this car – its reliability. There’s just a single trim level and 1.6-litre petrol engine, so don’t walk into your Mitsubishi dealer expecting to personalise the Lancer to the nth degree. Instead, focus on the relatively low cost and likely trouble-free ownership. We’d prefer to spend our money on a second-hand car, though.

Mitsubishi L200

The Mitsubishi L200 is one of the stalwarts of the pickup market and for 2019 there is a heavily revised model set to go on sale. At the core of the L200 is a rugged design that includes the ability to carry a payload of over 1,000kg and a towing ability of up to 3,100kg with a braked load. There are driver assistance features such as Hill Start Assist, and drivers can switch between two- and four-wheel drive on the move at speeds of up to 100km/h. For those tackling rougher terrain, there’s a low-range setting and a centre locking diff erential. It’s a serious workhorse, in eff ect.
