Editor’s Choice
Mercedes-Benz S-Class The S-Class is less of a car and more of an institution of luxury motoring. It is the default choice for many chauff eur companies and well-heeled buyer alike, even being chosen as the demure runabout by those that also have far more exotic machinery in their garage. That says a lot about the S-Class saloon in particular, which is handsome, but incredibly understated. The interior is beautifully made and the car whispers along no matter whether you’ve gone for petrol, diesel or hybrid power. For those that don’t mind a little attention, there’s the S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. These are quite diff erent to the saloon, but share its sense of serenity and high quality, just with a little more fl amboyance.

Mercedes-Benz GLS
If you know your Mercedes model naming strategy, then you’ll already tell that this car is an SUV (signifi ed by the ‘GL’) aligned with the S-Class. And that’s as clear a defi nition as any for the range-topping SUV in the line-up. The GLS lives up to that billing by being a gargantuan vehicle with a seriously imposing presence (the regular S-Class is positively bashful in comparison). As you’d hope, the big and brash exterior hides a luxurious and spacious cabin within, though it’s nowhere near as high-tech as some cars in the range. There are better options at this rarefi ed point of the market, in truth.
Mercedes-Benz V-Class
The parent in us looks upon the V-Class with wonder and longing. It’s simply massive (as it should be, based on the company’s Viano commercial vehicle), with large and useful sliding rear doors, two wheelbase lengths to choose from and expansive seating room in the back with more space for luggage than most of us will ever need. In the front, you sit upright with a great view out, treated to high-quality Mercedes fi ttings and plenty of power from the diesel engines underneath. And then you spot the price tag and realise that the V-Class is not designed for cash- strapped families with lots of kids, but probably more for luxury hotel chains to use as an airport shuttle. Such as waste…
