Ford Edge
Ford’s largest SUV, the Edge, arrives in Ireland in 2019 in facelifted form. Not that it really needed much of a nip and tuck, as it’s always been a stylish car with loads of road presence. Sadly, that exterior sharpness comes at the expense of an extra row of seats in the back, so the Edge can seat fi ve at a maximum, limiting its audience somewhat. On top of that, Ford prices the Edge to compete with established premium SUVs, which makes its job diffi cult. To help justify that, the Edge is very well- equipped, and it is of high quality, but the diesel engines are only so-so in terms of performance. It’s very much a heart-over-head purchase, to be honest, for those that like the look.

Ford Ranger
With pick-ups becoming increasingly popular as both business and lifestyle vehicles, the Ford Ranger sets out to cover all bases. Available as a single or double cab body style, it off ers rugged looks and durable construction to confront the task at hand. Two engines are available, a 2.2-litre diesel and a larger 3.2-litre diesel, though the latter doesn’t feel as powerful as you might expect. All models feature selectable four-wheel drive making them very capable off -road, but don’t expect high levels of refi nement when driving on tarmac, as the Ranger is designed to be a workhorse rather than a civilised SUV.

Ford Tourneo Connect
The Tourneo Connect is Ford’s practical people carrier that is produced on the same platform as the Transit Connect van. Image-conscious buyers may turn their noses up at such a thing, but it makes for a remarkably practical and surprisingly good-value family car. There’s a fi ve-seat version with oodles of space for all and a large boot, or a seven-seat Grand Tourneo Connect model for those that need lots of seats. Both version use sliding side doors and have high roofs. All variants are powered by a 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel engine (off ered in two power outputs) and buyers can choose from manual or automatic transmissions.
