Nissan Qashqai A defi ning force in its sector and long a top-seller, the second-generation Nissan Qashqai crossover continues to prove that its manufacturer hit a nerve with the car-buying public when it created this machine. It’s a long way from being a perfect car (it’s not very exciting to drive and the interior is functional, rather than fl ashy,

for example), but it does many things to a very high standard, making it an eff ortless family conveyance. Good pricing, generous equipment levels, neat exterior looks (helped by a 2017 facelift) and a new range of engines introduced in 2018 ensure the Qashqai should always be on a shopping shortlist for those tracking down a C-segment crossover.

Nissan Micra
For so long an also-ran in the supermini class, the fi fth-generation Micra is now knocking fi rmly on the door of the class elite. Sharp looks, a well- equipped and spacious cabin and vastly improved driving manners mark out a car that has gone from the butt of many a church or bingo joke to likeable in one fell swoop. Some might fi nd the exterior a bit busy looking and the sole engine (a 1.0-litre petrol unit) is gutless, but even so, the Micra is a fi ne suburban run-around. Only two versions of this fi ve-door hatchback are currently off ered for sale, so go for the more expensive model, as it’s not a lot more for plenty of extra equipment.

Nissan Pulsar
Considering that the Pulsar shares much of its makeup with the hugely success Nissan Qashqai, it hasn’t managed to replicate the popularity of that model in a segment that includes household names like the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. The styling of the Pulsar is related to the Qashqai’s and, while the interior isn’t very exciting to look at, it has very good rear legroom. However, it doesn’t feel as solid as many rivals, and the Pulsar off ers what is best described as a forgettable driving experience. Yes, it’s capable in all the typical areas, it just isn’t very desirable. Its diesel engine is well-proven, but we recommend skipping that in favour of the 1.2-litre petrol option, as it better suits the car.
