OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Spacetourer Business BlueHDi 150

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE C5 Aircross PureTech 180 automatic Flair

Citroën C5 Aircross Citroën Spacetourer

If the C4 Spacetourer twins are too small for your needs, then you need the much larger Citroën Spacetourer (with no ‘C4’ in the name) model. It’s based on the same underpinnings as Citroën’s Dispatch van, which is why it has so much blocky space inside. There are several diff erent body lengths with various seating confi gurations – and lots of fl exibility in how you use the seats. The Spacetourer would make a fi ne taxi and its extra space and seating capacity will be a godsend for large families. The all-diesel engine range varies from 115- to 180hp and there’s even an automatic option. You’ll be surprised how well the Spacetourer handles Irish roads, too.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Ateca Performance Pack

Cupra Ateca Once a performance sub-division of Spanish brand SEAT, Cupra is now launching as a separate brand and its fi rst dedicated model is the Cupra Ateca, based on SEAT’s SUV of the same name. There are some styling diff erences around the grille and wheels, while at the back, four exhaust tips hint at the car’s potency. Under the bonnet is a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine developing 300hp, with power going to all four wheels. You get the best of equipment inside, with an all-digital instrument display and large touchscreen system among the highlights. It’s likely to be a niche product for now, though several other brands are launching performance SUVs over the coming year so perhaps this is the start of it.

Citroën was one of the last manufacturers to launch a full-size SUV, but the C5 Aircross has arguably been worth the wait. It goes up against fi rmly established rivals like the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson and Peugeot 5008 to name but a few. Bold styling ties in with the new look of the Citroën range, and it works just as well in a car of this size. Like the C4 Cactus, the C5 Aircross gets a suspension setup that uses the company’s Progressive Hydraulic Cushions, resulting in a noticeably smoother ride, but without negatively aff ecting the car’s handling. There are diesel and petrol engines with automatic and manual transmissions; however, all models are only available with front-wheel drive. The C5 Aircross features one of the largest boots in the segment and in the rear there are three independent seats, but unlike some rivals, Citroën doesn’t off er a seven-seat option.
