OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Carens 1.7 EX diesel
Kia Carens
Although it’s been on the market for quite some time now, and it may not feel super-modern inside, the Kia Carens MPV is still well worth a look. It has seven seats, but is quite a compact car, so the rearmost chairs are best kept for occasional use, though the middle row has loads of space, and we reckon it should fi t in three child seats, depending on how bulky they are. What’s more, the Carens is very solidly built, from its tactile exterior door handles to its no-nonsense cabin materials. You won’t need to spend much time thinking about which model to go for either, as there’s a single 1.7-litre diesel engine and two trim levels – one more luxurious than the other.
Kia Stonic
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Stonic 1.0 K4
There is certainly no lack of choice in the compact crossover market at the moment. However, we sometimes question just what qualifi es as such a car, and the Kia Stonic is one of them. Yes, it has plenty of appealing style and the interior space isn’t bad, but it’s hard to see why you’d call it a crossover given that it isn’t any taller than a regular hatchback. Nevertheless, it feels agile around town and although the suspension is on the fi rm side, it delivers a comfortable ride. As tempting as it may be to go for the larger engine, we think the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit suits it well, though we’d rather spend our money on the more refi ned Kia Ceed.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Sportage K4
Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage has been a consistently strong seller in Ireland over the last number of years, and for 2019 there is an updated model with tweaked looks and some interior refi nements. Along with good levels of room in the rear, there is a useful 491 litres of boot space, which can increase to 1,480 litres with the rear seats folded down. Other updates include the introduction of a new 1.6-litre diesel engine that is noticeable sweeter to drive. All models sold in Ireland are front-wheel drive only, but with so few of these SUVs ever being taken off -road we don’t think many buyers will be put off by this. The Sportage remains a strong competitor in its class, mixing functionality and widespread appeal with keen pricing and good levels of specifi cation.
