While the fourth-generation Renault Megane is undoubtedly at its absolute fi nest in Renault Sport guise, where it delivers 280hp from a turbocharged 1.8-litre engine, there’s much about the regular line-up to recommend this French family hatch. For starters, it looks really good, adopting the brand’s latest design signatures of C-shaped front lights and near-full-width clusters at the rear. Inside, it is spacious and generously equipped, while the R-Link 2 portrait infotainment is impressive looking. It’s perhaps not hugely thrilling to drive, but with a wide variety of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, and a capacious and handsome Sport Tourer estate version available too (along with the four-door Megane Grand Coupe), then there should be a Megane to suit every need.

Renault Twingo
When it comes to smaller cars Renault doesn’t like to stick with convention; hence the Twingo is a rear-engined, fi ve-door hatchback. Despite the position of the engine, there’s no luggage space under the nose, so its boot in the back is very small. Still, the front wheels can turn very far, making for a super-tight turning circle. Most versions feature a modest 70hp 1.0-litre petrol engine, though the range-topper is a 90p unit. The minimalist interior looks just as funky as the outside of the car, and it does a good job of distracting from the cheap-feeling materials used throughout. While it’s a fun car to drive around town, the Twingo’s appeal begins to wane on the motorway. Oh, and the rear-drive layout doesn’t result in a sporty driving experience, either.
Renault Twizy
There isn’t a more unusual electric car on sale today than the Renault Twizy. This two-seater comes with optional doors (yes, they’re optional) and has an interior that is weatherproof, which is useful seeing as it’s exposed to the elements most of the time. The bone-shaking ride doesn’t help the Twizy’s cause and, for most people, the novelty wears off after about ten minutes. It does have the added advantage (or disadvantage depending on your viewpoint) of not having to rely on public charge points, topping up the battery via a charging cable that uses a domestic plug socket instead. The driving range on a full battery is up to 100 kilometres, but you do have to also pay a monthly lease for the battery
