SsangYong
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Tivoli 1.6 DLX 2WD manual
SsangYong Tivoli
SsangYong might not be as well-known as its South Korean compatriots Kia and Hyundai, but the company that had a reputation for making utilitarian commercial vehicles is altering its approach. The Tivoli is its compact crossover, going up against the likes of the Nissan Juke. It’s got decent looks, loads of space inside and provides a comfortable ride. The XLV version
adds even more space in the back, turning the Tivoli into an estate SUV of sorts. Oddly, it doesn’t off er any extra seating above the standard fi ve. Both interiors are the same otherwise, with reasonable levels of fi nish, but it already looks dated compared to some of its rivals and it isn’t quite cheap enough to grab the attention of those looking at the default options.
SsangYong Rodius
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Just one model
If you absolutely need a huge seven-seat MPV and you want to buy new, but you’re kind of budget-restricted, the SsangYong Rodius Mk2 might be just the answer. You have to accept certain quality sacrifi ces if you go with this Korean people-mover, because the interior fi nishing is still a long way off the prevailing standards in the modern age, and there are ergonomic issues too, such as the odd driving position. However, it’s nothing like as astonishingly ugly as its predecessor (widely accepted to be one of the most hideous cars ever built) and it actually drives in a perfectly acceptable fashion. Buy this if what you need more than anything else is lots and lots of space, on wheels. Though there are other options…
SsangYong Korando
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Korando 2WD manual
The Korando is the smallest of SsangYong’s SUV range (though sits above the Tivoli in the line-up) and off ers good levels of passenger and boot space for its class. It gets a 2.2-litre diesel engine, which is larger than most of the competition, producing 178hp and 400Nm of torque, meaning it has plenty of pulling power. It also off ers the choice of front- or all-wheel drive, so if you do want to go off -roading, this should be able to power through most of what’s thrown at it. Sadly, inside it isn’t as modern as several of its key rivals, and the quality isn’t quite up to scratch considering the asking price.
