OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Insignia Sports Tourer SRi 1.6 diesel manual

Opel Insignia Topping the Opel range is the Insignia line- up, consisting of the Grand Sport (a fi ve-door hatchback that is often referred to as a saloon), the elegant and massively spacious Sports Tourer estate and the Insignia Country Tourer. The latter is based on the estate, but has four-wheel drive, a raised ride height and rugged styling add-ons. It’s all the rage in Alpine regions, where it’s really

quite useful, but mostly bought here for reasons of image – and it’s not cheap. There are also the Insignia GSi cars to consider, which are notably more sporting (and really very good to drive), but also quite costly. The rest of the cars focus more on comfort and refi nement – and they excel on those counts, but can look a little awkward to our eyes – especially the fi ve-door model.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Mokka X Elite 1.6 CDTi manual

Opel Corsa

The Opel Corsa supermini, now well into its fi fth generation, stands for spacious and good- value transport, though it feels dated by newer rivals, certainly in terms of its switchgear, and it feels like its plodding along toward retirement in the near future. Hence, there appears to be a very limited range of models off ered, certainly in the more sensible fi ve-door format. The three-door car looks a little sportier, though obviously means more restricted access to the back seats. Still, that’s the only body style the newer GSi junior hot hatch is off ered in, but in truth, that car is very expensive for what it off ers. All Corsas are powered by petrol engines, ranging from 75-150hp and there are ‘120 Year’ special editions to celebrate Opel’s anniversary.

Opel Mokka X

We really like the looks of the Opel Mokka X, a compact SUV/crossover that’s decent to drive and more spacious inside than it appears it should be. Nonetheless, it sometimes feels as if it’s priced to compete with the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai Tucson, while it’s smaller than those. At least it’s of high quality and comes with the option of four-wheel drive. Not that most buyers will go for that, in a bid to keep pricing and motor tax down. Power comes from either a turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine or a 1.6-litre diesel. Both are fi ne engines, though we favour the latter. Buyers can add an automatic gearbox to both, but that really pushes the pricing up. There are only SC and Elite trim levels to choose from.
