OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Amarok Highline 3.0 TDI V6 204hp DSG

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Passat 2.0 TDI DSG Highline

Volkswagen Passat Volkswagen Amarok

In the one-tonne pick-up world, there are only a few trucks that can be fi tted with engines with anything more than four cylinders – the top Ford Ranger and the Mercedes-Benz X 350 d are the only ones with the big motors these vehicles deserve. Oh, except for the Volkswagen Amarok – which is only powered by V6 turbodiesels. It’s also one of the most refi ned one-tonne pick-ups going, with a luxurious cabin and great driving manners. With its most potent 258hp engine, it’s also incredibly quick for such a big machine, but this kind of quality doesn’t come cheap – the brilliant Amarok can get quite pricey, very quickly, come ordering time.

As the company’s fl agship saloon, the Volkswagen Passat very much looks the part and it provides generous levels of interior space and, more importantly, refi nement. Capable of shrinking long distance drives thanks to its comfort and ease of driving, it makes a strong case for being a suitable company car and features the high standard of fi nish inside that is expected from such a Volkswagen. In estate guise, it provides even more carrying capacity with a total boot volume of 1,780 litres (with the rear seats folded) and the boxy shape makes bulky items easier to fi t in. There is also a plug-in hybrid version called the Passat GTE. It uses a 1.4-litre petrol engine working in tandem with an electric motor and a battery that can drive up to 50 kilometres on electric power alone. Lower motor tax and a qupted 1.6 litres/100km of combined fuel consumption are also a draw, but fastidious charging is required to see those kinds of fuel economy fi gures.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Arteon 2.0 TDI 190 DSG R-Line

Volkswagen Arteon

If the Volkswagen Passat is a little too conservatively styled for your liking, then the sleek Arteon may be more your thing. Taking up where the Volkswagen CC left off , the Arteon is a clear rival for sporty looking premium fastbacks such as the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. It is quite a spec-dependent car, so we recommend opting for the R-Line trim if you place a

greater emphasis on style. It isn’t merely a Passat in designer clothing either, as the Arteon handles well and when matched with one of the more powerful engines it delivers a more engaging drive. A 190hp 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine is new for 2019 while the range-topping diesel is a 250hp 2.0-litre TDI with a DSG transmission. Several advanced driver assistance features will be a hit with tech fans too.
