SsangYong Rexton


There’s a bit of a closely kept secret, and it’s that the SsangYong Rexton is a fi ne tow car. This is because it has always had a ladder-frame chassis, true four- wheel drive and proper low-ratio gears, meaning it can go anywhere and haul up to 3.5 tonnes. But while the original Rexton was a cheap-and-cheerful alternative to a well-fi nished mainstream SUV, the latest 2017-launched model has seen a signifi cant


upswing in quality. While still not possessed of the fi nest ride in the world, and perhaps hampered by a somewhat unrefi ned (but powerful) 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine, the Rexton is nevertheless pleasant to sit in and decent to drive. And yet, despite a much nicer fascia for the dashboard, it retains all the 4x4 and towing prowess it ever had, without the price going bananas. It’s a clever piece of kit, this.

SsangYong Tivoli


The SsangYong name has a chequered history in Ireland. It returns in 2020 with a refreshed range with the Tivoli leading the company’s charge in the compact crossover market where it faces challenges from models like the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur. The car’s setup favours comfort over dynamics, and inside there are reasonably good amounts of room, although some elements of the cabin do feel cheap, especially when you compare it to other vehicles in the segment. In a move that is somewhat unique in the SUV segment, SsangYong also sells an XLV version, which adds more rear luggage space, making it like an estate version. Unusually, the XLV doesn’t off er more seats above the standard fi ve.

The SsangYong Turismo was once the ugliest car in the world. That was when it was known as the SsangYong Rodius, but steady evolution of its design has made it somewhat passable in 2019 and beyond. Regrettably, this is not a SsangYong that has undergone a metamorphosis into something genuinely worth consideration – not unless budget is your absolute be-all and end-all. While it is vast on the inside, possessed of an impressive warranty and decently equipped for the cash, it feels way behind the times in terms of its driving experience, its mechanical refi nement and its interior fi nishing. In simple terms, the Turismo is big and off ers (physically) a lot of car for your buck, but there are better resolved and more desirable alternatives out there – basically, you get what you pay for.
