Land Rover RChoiceecommended Editor’s Range Rover Evoque

Now into its second generation, the Range Rover Evoque still has a mostly similar look to its massively successful predecessor, but gets a more modern design with hints of the Velar to it. It now only comes as a fi ve-door body style, but there are two main specifi cation types along with a First Edition model. Tick the right options and you’ll fi nd the Evoque dripping in the latest tech that would have James Bond feeling impressed. From a rear-facing camera that displays in the

rear-view mirror, to a system that can allow you to eff ectively see through the car’s bonnet to where the wheels are, there’s enough here to satisfy any tech lovers. The Evoque now delivers a far more polished driving experience, too, thanks to improvements in engine performance and sound insulation. While it oozes chic urban style, it remains competent when venturing off -road or driving in poor weather conditions thanks to its all-wheel drive and assistance systems.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Discovery 3.0 SD6 HSE 7 Seat

Land Rover Discovery

The Discovery is one of the largest models that Land Rover produces, and it manages to dwarf many of its rivals. It can be ordered in fi ve- or seven-seat confi gurations, while a two-seat commercial version is available for those needing to transport goods. A 2.0-litre petrol engine is joined by a 2.0-litre diesel in the range and a more powerful 3.0-litre diesel power unit, which, if your budget permits, is the one to go for in our opinions. Travelling in the Discovery is a refi ned and relaxing experience thanks in part to the eight- speed automatic transmission. Even though many buyers may not stray too far from nice tarmac roads, the Discovery is a highly capable vehicle when taken off -road. Depending on the model, there is electronically adjustable air suspension in addition to a twin-speed transfer box to further aid control off -road.

56 Auto Ireland Guide to New Cars 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport

Although not entirely new, a major revamp of the Land Rover Discovery Sport ushers in signifi cant improvements that set it up to fi ght rivals like the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60. Mostly new exterior styling gives it an appearance that is closer to its larger sibling, the Discovery and, like that it is also available with the choice of fi ve or seven seats inside. However, it’s worth noting that the third row is quite limited for space and is best suited for smaller children at best. Material quality inside the cabin has improved a good deal, as has the Discovery Sport’s refi nement on the road. All models bar the entry-level version get automatic transmissions with all- wheel drive, as well as mild hybrid electrifi cation for the powertrain. Land Rover also plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid version that will benefi t from lower emissions and cheaper motor tax.
