OUR PICK OF THE RANGE X6 M50d
The BMW X6 was the company’s fi rst stab at a mix between SUV and coupe and the third generation hits the Irish market in 2020. We’ve already driven it and it’s a highly polished product, as you’d expect given the pricing and its alignment with the accomplished BMW X5 in terms of powertrains and technology. We’ll let you be the judge of its daring exterior design, but few will fi nd fault with the high-quality interior, even if rear headroom and boot space are mildly worse than in the X5. The X6 is a fraction sportier to drive than the X5, but it’s a luxury SUV with a sporty look rather than a sports car with the practicality of an SUV. Petrol versions of the X6 make no sense in Ireland, especially when there’s the seriously fast (and acceptably frugal) M50d variant on the price list.
BMW X7
There’s no other way of putting it - the BMW X7 is massive. Taking its position at the top of BMW’s vast SUV range, the X7 off ers all the luxury and most of the refi nement of a 7 Series saloon in SUV form. The exterior styling is divisive, but the paint colour, trim level and wheel design can make a big diff erence to how it looks. Inside, the cabin isn’t all that diff erent to the X5’s other than a tangible increase in space, and it’s available with a seemingly endless list of options. Its third row of seats provide enough space for adults, too. There is even the option of a plush six-seat format. You can opt for a torque-heavy quad-turbocharged 50d diesel version, but the 30d has suffi cient performance for most buyers. While the X7 surprises on the driving dynamics front, it’s fi rst and foremost a luxury car.
BMW Z4

Much has been said about the BMW Z4, mostly due to it sharing some core architecture features with the Toyota Supra. That shouldn’t put you off , as both are very good (and diff erent) cars to drive. The combination of open-top motoring and a two-seat, front-engine, rear-wheel- drive setup is a classic one, and BMW off ers it in three performance fl avours starting with the 197hp sDrive20i. That version is arguably the sweetest of the lot, but you can also have a 258hp sDrive30i or the range-topping M40i, which, at 340hp, puts it into Porsche 718 Boxster territory. Whichever model you go for, the Z4 rewards the driver and has just enough practicality to make it usable on a daily basis. It has a very slick folding fabric roof, too.
