OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Berlingo Feel XL BlueHDi 130 EAT8
RChoiceecommended Editor’s
Citroën Berlingo The majority of people may turn their noses up at models like the Citroën Berlingo (which shares its underpinnings with a van) when considering a family car, but they do make a great deal of sense. In its current guise, the Berlingo works to increase that appeal with a more interesting exterior design and a host of smart features inside, not to mention loads and loads of storage. You can choose between a regular M or longer Xl version, which off er fi ve and seven seats respectively. Its sliding side doors are handy for when you’re getting passengers in and out in a tight spot. A highly versatile interior allows you to remove some or all of the rear seats, eff ectively turning it into a van in the process. While it may not have the kerbside appeal of an SUV, there’s no disputing the usefulness and usability that the Berlingo off ers, making it a smart buy for those with larger families in particular.
cUPRA Cupra Ateca
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Ateca 2.0 TSI 300 DSG 4Drive
Cupra, a portmanteau of ‘Cup Race’, has long been SEAT’s performance marker, but in 2018 it was decided to make Cupra a standalone brand all of its own. The fi rst product released under this new banner was a fast version of the SEAT Ateca crossover-SUV, resulting in the Cupra Ateca. It uses a 300hp 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, allied to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and SEAT’s version of the Volkswagen Group’s all-wheel-drive system, branded ‘4Drive’. The interior employs a jazzier digital instrument cluster and an impressive equipment specifi cation, and the range is simple to understand as there’s only one model of Cupra Ateca – all you can choose is which (limited) options you want to add. To drive, the Cupra splits opinion, but it is fast, grippy and capable for a big machine, and it works well as a pragmatic family vehicle that can excite its driver when the mood takes them.

30 Auto Ireland Guide to New Cars 2020
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Leon ST 290
Cupra Leon
This is still technically a car trading as a SEAT Leon Cupra, but it will eventually fall underneath the Spanish’s fi rm’s all-new performance sub-brand. In its current form, the Cupra Leon has been around since 2014 and it uses the same underpinnings and running gear as various fast Volkswagens, like the Golfs GTI and R. Right now, SEAT continues to sell the hot Leon as a 290hp machine that can either be specifi ed as a hatchback or an ST wagon, and it makes more sense as the latter as it has fewer direct rivals that way. Excellent performance, fun handling and decent day-to-day manners make the Cupra Leon a fi ne car to live with, although its interior can come across as a touch drab in a marketplace where style is everything. Still, the Cupra Leon stands comparison to some of the latest and greatest hot hatches, despite its age.
