AUDI RChoiceecommended Editor’s
Audi A1 The Audi A1 is now into its second generation, featuring edgier styling, a fi ve-door-only design and more in-car tech. Despite its size, the A1’s interior is just as premium as those found in the larger cars in Audi’s range. The posh supermini off ers buyers a multitude of vibrant colours and specs to choose from, though all of this comes at a price that may have you looking to the larger Audi A3 for better value.

Unlike its predecessor, the A1 is now an all-petrol aff air on the engine front, ranging in size from a perky 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit to the range-topping 2.0-litre with 197hp. Not wanting to miss out on the crossover craze, the Audi A1 citycarver adds rugged cladding to the supermini’s bodywork. Upgraded suspension lifts its ride height by 35mm, too, but don’t expect much off -road ability.

Audi A3
The A3 is one of Audi’s most popular models in Ireland, and for a good reason, as it comes in a wide range of body styles, from a fi ve-door Sportback to the chic Cabriolet. Though a new A3 is set to debut later in 2020, this current model has aged remarkably well thanks in part to top-notch interior design. It’s good to drive and off ers reasonably decent levels of refi nement on the move. The frugal 1.6-litre diesel may appeal to company car drivers, but don’t overlook the petrol engines, in particular, the 116hp 1.0-litre 30 TFSI version. If you want more go, then the S3 Sportback and Saloon off er 300hp with a seven-speed automatic all-wheel-drive transmission. But for all-out performance then it’s got to be the range- topping RS 3 that is powered by a legendary 2.5-litre fi ve-cylinder engine. Off ered in both saloon and fi ve-door hatchback guises, this version delivers a scintillating 400hp with an exhaust note to match.

Audi A4
Audi unveiled a suite of updates for its evergreen A4 model in the middle of 2019, but 2020 is eff ectively the starting point for this facelifted version in Ireland. The changes aren’t radical, of course, just a nip and tuck here and there to keep the A4 fresh in the tightly contested premium sports saloon class. As ever, the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class are its arch enemies, though the A4 also steps on the toes of the better mainstream saloons on the market, such as the Volkswagen Passat. Of course, as ever, the A4 is also off ered as an Avant (estate in Audi- speak), which gets a usefully bigger boot. Whichever model you go for, the A4 excels in terms of quality, refi nement and comfort, leaving BMW focus on driving excitement, perhaps. Unless you can stomach the price and running costs of the 450hp Audi RS 4. Most will be happy with the signifi cantly updated 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is quieter and cleaner than ever.
