MAZDa RChoiceecommended Editor’s IS SOMETHING MISSING?

The Mazda CX-3 crossover is not currently listed for sale in Ireland. It is due a suite of modest updates and is expected to arrive back on the market later in 2020

Mazda3

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Mazda3 Hatchback SkyActiv-X GT Sport

For its latest C-segment challenger, the Japanese car brand has given the Mazda3 two distinct variants in the form of a very chic fi ve-door hatchback and a smart-looking four-door saloon. The hatch is one of the most striking cars to launch in the segment and makes models like the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf seem dull in comparison. A sense of quality continues through to the interior, which includes an 8.8-inch

infotainment system that is much-improved by Mazda standards. Regular petrol, diesel and an innovative SkyActiv-X petrol engine that uses diesel combustion principles with mild hybrid tech showcase the company’s advanced engineering expertise, all of which comes in a chassis that even keener drivers will appreciate. The Mazda3 carries a premium price, but it is readily justifi able when you get behind the wheel.

Mazda2

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Mazda2 Executive SE

Not everyone that wants a small car is necessarily on a tight budget, and sometimes having some more upmarket features in desired. This area of the market is where the Mazda2 does well, as it apes the design and fi nish of its larger models in a smaller package. For 2020 it gets further enhancements like improved suspension, LED headlamps as standard and advanced driver assistance systems, along with mild hybrid tech to boost fuel economy and engine torque. The 1.5-litre petrol engine comes in two power outputs depending on the trim level you choose. Its relatively compact size makes it a boon to drive in cities, yet being a fi ve-door hatchback, it retains plenty of practical aspects.

Mazda CX-30

A recent arrival to the Mazda line-up, the CX-30 is the brand’s third SUV and fi lls a crucial gap between the compact CX-3 and larger CX-5. A blend of soft curves and contrasting black cladding make this one of the more attractive SUVs in its class, while the interior features a clean and uncluttered layout. At 430 litres, the boot isn’t as large as those of some rivals, but capacity can increase to 1,406 litres by folding the rear seats down. There is a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and either diesel or mild hybrid petrol engines. An advanced and unique SkyActiv-X engine blends petrol power with diesel-like combustion tech for better effi ciency, though this is a more expensive version to buy. Engine choices aside, the CX-30 is more engaging to drive than many other SUVs.
