Hyundai Santa Fe The largest of Hyundai’s products, the Santa Fe has always offered large SUV space and practicality for a (relatively) bargain price. The Mk4, though, which launched in 2018, added a huge dose of desirability, courtesy of striking, smoothed-off looks and an interior that must rank as one of Hyundai’s best yet. Just one 2.2-litre CRDi turbodiesel is offered as motive power, this being lifted from the old Mk3, but it has been updated with emissions- reducing technology and the automatic option is a much slicker eight-speed unit. Ride comfort and noise suppression levels are both deeply impressive on the Santa Fe, although we’d stick with a manual 4WD model for the best compromise between emissions, cost and luxury. Furthermore, the rear-most two seats – while perfectly usable for younger children – are not going to be very comfortable to sit in for long, if you’re a taller adult.


Hyundai Ioniq


OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Ioniq Electric


Hyundai’s great trick it pulled with the 2016-launched Ioniq was to offer a choice of three different electrified vehicle (EV) drivetrains in one car. Buyers could choose from a Hybrid (HEV), which had no plug-in facilities for charging, but which functioned like a Toyota Prius, leading to sub-100g/km emissions, while a Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) added up to 50km of pure electric range to a petrol-powered combustion engine. The Ioniq Electric took a different look to the other two, with a smooth silver nose-cone and copper detailing (the other two Ioniqs wear blue), but all three are excellent – mainly because the hybrids both use a DCT gearbox, instead of the coarser CVT. Updates in 2018 saw the range of the pure EV Ioniq increase from 200km to around 320km. It’s the Electric that is the best Ioniq to drive, too, and it’s one of the best EVs on sale today.
