Fiat 500L Wagon
With the reborn version of the Fiat 500 proving a hit in the early 21st century, the Italian company realised it had a top seller on its hands and that it should cash in. It therefore decided to spin various diff erent models off the base 500 hatchback – namely, a convertible called the 500C, an SUV called the 500X and then an MPV called the 500L. This originally came in both short- and long-wheelbase forms,
although a facelift in 2018 saw the fi ve- seat model dropped in Ireland. That just leaves the 500L Wagon, a seven-seat MPV that is only 4.38 metres from front to back. It doesn’t drive with anything like the eff ervescence of the regular 500 and the solitary 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine is willing, rather than special, but if you really want a Fiat 500 and you’ve got a big brood of kids, this is the only model to pick.

Fiat Tipo
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Tipo 1.6 120hp DCT Lounge
The Fiat Tipo is one of the more aff ordable off erings in the busy C-segment that includes models like the Kia Ceed, Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. Fiat off ers the Tipo as a four-door saloon, a fi ve-door hatchback, or as an estate. It has decent styling, too, with three specifi cation grades to choose from, though you’ll need to select the mid-level ‘Easy’ grade to gain items like 16-inch alloy wheels and cruise control. The interior is basic when compared to others, namely due to less impressive off erings when it comes to equipment like the infotainment system. Its petrol engines are a little lacking in performance, too, although its diesel engines have low emissions, making them tax-friendly and in general they are quite economical to run. The Tipo is a budget car with modest styling at the end of the day.
Fiat 500
It’s quite phenomenal that 13 years after its debut, the Fiat 500 continues to sell well and enjoy no shortage in appeal to buyers young and old. The cute styling remains the best modernisation of a classic to date, but aside from that, it’s a fun car to drive. Yes, there are better cars in the segment that feel more refi ned, but there’s just something about the 500 that makes it hard to knock. The 500C gets a retractable roof, which is great for the occasional warm day. With only one engine to choose from - a 69hp 1.2-litre petrol unit - you can spend more time deciding which of the three main specifi cation grades or other special edition models suit your needs before delving into the various paint and interior options.
