OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Mustang GT 5.0 Fastback manual
Ford Mustang As icons go, they don’t come much bigger than the Ford Mustang – and, after half a century of waiting, the car has fi nally offi cially come to Europe in right-hand-drive form. It launched in 2015, but after a poor EuroNCAP safety score in 2017, Ford revised the car with fresher looks, a lower-powered version of the 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo engine and additional safety kit to make it more appealing. It also gained

a ten-speed automatic option for both engines, while a Bullitt special edition (which used an uprated version of the 5.0-litre V8 in the GT) harked back to the famous Steve McQueen fi lm of the 1960s. Body styles for the Mustang remain the Fastback (coupe) and the Convertible, but the former off ers the better drive, while the 5.0-litre V8 is the engine that has the charisma the legendary Mustang deserves.
Ford GT Although Ford is a manufacturer of mainstream fare, it also has an enviable motorsport record – with Le Mans being one of its happy hunting grounds. The GT40 of the 1960s was revived in 2004-06 as a 5.4-litre supercharged V8 supercar, but the GT that succeeded that vehicle in 2017 was something else entirely. Build purely to homologate the GT for endurance car racing (and another tilt at Le Mans), the road- going version features a ferocious 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost turbo petrol engine that churns out 656hp – enough for a top speed well beyond 320km/h and a 0-100km/h time of just 3.0 seconds. It also has a party trick: select Track mode and the car drops rapidly on its suspension, while the rear spoiler rises as it readies itself for rapid driving. Finally, you can’t buy a GT; you have to be invited to have one by Ford.
