OUR PICK OF THE RANGE C-Max 1.5 TDCi 120 PowerShift Titanium

Ford C-Max

The Ford C-Max is a mid-sized fi ve-seat MPV that has been around in its second-generation guise since 2011. It was treated to a midlife refresh in 2015, but, to all intents and purposes, it is a car getting on for ten years old now. A seven-seat model, called the Grand C-Max, was off ered for a long time alongside the C-Max but, with production of both models ended as of the middle of 2019, just the C-Max continues on sale into 2020. Two specifi cations and three engines provide a decent amount of choice, but to counteract the C-Max’s venerable age, it’s best to go for the top-of-the- range 120hp TDCi model, fi tted as standard with a PowerShift automatic, and the Titanium trim to get the best run-out experience of the C-Max. As MPVs go, it drives nicely enough – but the interior isn’t as cleverly designed or practical as those found in newer rivals.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE S-Max ST-Line

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Galaxy 2.0 TDCi 150 automatic Titanium

Ford S-Max

If you need to transport you and six others, but you still want a car that’s sporty in appearance and not an SUV, your choices are limited. Enter the Ford S-Max. It takes most of the practical elements of the boxier Ford Galaxy and wraps them up in a slightly diff erent package. The Titanium grade looks smart and features a roomy and well-made interior, while the ST-Line model plays up that performance-themed look. You do get a third row of two seats in the S-Max, and these are fi ne for kids. The option of a large glass roof panel adds to the sense of space inside, too. We think it’s worth giving the posh Vignale model a miss as its infl ated price doesn’t justify what you get, and it features diff erent seats that aren’t as comfortable as the regular model’s. Whichever version you go for, there is just one engine available, a 150hp 2.0-litre diesel, and this comes with the choice of manual or automatic gearboxes. That may change a little with the updated version set to arrive in 2020.

Ford Galaxy

In the wake of launches of smaller MPVs from Ford, like the B-Max, C-Max, S-Max and Tourneo Custom, it’s sometimes hard to remember that the company’s fi rst-ever people carrier was the Galaxy, which launched all the way back in 1995. Originally a machine that was badge-engineered to be sold by Volkswagen and SEAT (as the Sharan and Alhambra respectively), in later generations it has stood alone as its own model. The Mk4 came out in 2015 and has soldiered on in the face of customers migrating to seven-seat SUVs instead, but it still represents a large, useful MPV that will happily seat seven. It comes with just one diesel engine, a 150hp 2.0-litre TDCi, and a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes. There is also just one spec to go at, the high-ranking Titanium, though that may change when the updated model arrives in 2020.
