Volkswagen’s latest addition to its SUV line-up may be the smallest, but the T-Cross goes big on style in a segment that demands it. Going beyond merely being a Polo on stilts, the T-Cross seems to target younger buyers with its fun design and availability of more vibrant colours. Technology from cars further up the range has trickled down to the T-Cross with items like the 10.25-inch Active Info instrument display and adaptive cruise control being available. Keyless access and wireless smartphone charging add to the modern conveniences. With 385 litres of boot space, the T-Cross can swallow up as much luggage as a Golf. Usefully, the rear seat can slide fore and aft to benefi t rear passenger legroom or add more boot volume. A 1.6-litre diesel engine is joined by a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that comes in 95- and 115hp fl avours, the latter being also available with a seven- speed automatic. The T-Cross is refi ned enough to cope with motorway journeys , but it’s in the urban environment where its fun-to-drive qualities shine through.

Volkswagen Arteon
Picking up where the Volkswagen CC left off , the Arteon is a far sleeker alternative to the more sensible looking Passat. Its upmarket look includes frameless doors, a sloping roofl ine and a distinctive front grille design that puts it into the same territory as models like the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5 Sportback. Despite the sleek profi le, the Arteon packs a convenient ‘liftback’ design and still manages to off er almost the same amount of boot space as the boxier Passat. A 190hp petrol version adds more fi zz to the driving experience, but either of the two diesel engines may be more of a lure, especially to business users covering large distances. The 240hp model includes a dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission and Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, turning the Arteon into a fast, comfortable cruiser.

Volkswagen Caddy Life
While the Caddy Life is derived from a commercial vehicle, inside it gets the same level of fi nish as Volkswagen’s other passenger vehicles. Items like leather and Alcantara upholstery and a large colour touchscreen display make this feel like a family car - just one that can provide much more versatility than most. To keep things simple, there is only one specifi cation grade available and a 102hp 2.0-litre diesel engine, with the choice of fi ve-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearboxes. The Caddy Life features seven seats, but thanks to its van origins, the rear seats can be easily removed to change the seating confi guration or increase load capacity. Sliding doors add to the ease of use, although the rear tailgate is large and requires a lot of space behind the vehicle to open fully. At its largest confi guration the boot measures in at a colossal 3,880 litres.
