Toyota Corolla For a long time, the Toyota Corolla was widely regarded as one of the most boring cars that you could buy. It was automotive white goods. However, we must give full credit to Toyota for turning this around with the current model. It carries a striking exterior design that is easily a match for the best in the segment, and its interior quality has come on leaps and bounds. Some rejigging of the range, including the retirement of the Auris nameplate, means that the Corolla now comes as a fi ve-door hatchback, four-door saloon or an estate. Two engines are available - both hybrid - with 122- or 178hp outputs and each using a CVT automatic with front-wheel drive. The lower power version comfortably rivals Toyota’s hybrid champion, the Prius, in the fuel economy stakes, meaning you no longer have to choose the quirky styling to get the best hybrid from Toyota.

Toyota Aygo
The Aygo was born out of a joint venture with Peugeot and Citroen, and the second-generation Toyota city car launched in 2014 with a distinctive X-branded face. In 2018, a facelift and tech update toned down that ‘Manga’ front end somewhat, although you can still see this design feature if you focus on the nose badge and the lights and shape of the bumper. In truth, that’s the most exciting thing about the Aygo – otherwise, it’s a pretty humdrum city car that is showing its age now. A solitary 1.0-litre, 71hp, non-turbo, three-cylinder petrol engine is the only motive power, which comes teamed to a fi ve-speed manual or a CVT branded x-shift auto. All the trim names also feature ‘x’, running x-play, x-play+ and then x-cite. Choose from three or fi ve doors for the body, and that’s your lot: a profi cient, reliable run-around from the Japanese fi rm.

Toyota Prius
It’s probably the best-known hybrid in the world, and a car that has repeatedly set the standard for improving the technology. The Toyota Prius has always enjoyed unique styling, done to make it as aerodynamic and therefore fuel effi cient as possible. It’s a love/hate design for which Toyota remains unapologetic. The interior look is equally unique with a stubby drive selector mounted onto the centre console and an instrument display located further forward where the dashboard meets the windscreen. If you want to maximise the potential for fuel economy, then stick to the standard spec as its smaller 15-inch wheels contribute to effi ciency gains, and help off er a more comfortable ride. Whichever model you choose you will likely be happy with the effi ciency of the Prius over time, though if the quirky styling isn’t to your taste, it’s worth noting that almost the same hybrid powertrain is available in the Corolla.
