Audi e-tron Audi Q8
If the upright Audi Q7 design doesn’t quite do it for you, the sportier Q8 may be of interest. It doesn’t have the same coupe roofl ine as the BMW X6, yet it still manages to look athletic, perhaps in a rugby prop sense. Inside, an array of touchscreens and a digital instrument cluster ensure a modern look and feel to what is a reasonably roomy cabin. The Irish Q8 line-up starts with the 231hp 45 TDI and rises to the more powerful 286hp 50 TDI. Both utilise mild hybrid technology and come with Audi’s quattro all-wheel- drive automatic transmission. This car is all about the torque, and these diesel engines have plenty of it. Turning up the heat is the SQ8. Wearing up to 22-inch wheels and sporting a styling kit that includes quad tailpipes are the rear, this 4.0-litre TDI diesel pumps out 435hp, while the 900Nm of torque feels enough to pull a train and helps ensure it can reach 100km/h from rest in under fi ve seconds.

The e-tron is Audi’s fi rst foray into the world of production electric vehicles. It takes on an SUV style to satisfy market demands, allowing for ample passenger and luggage space, while accommodating a sizeable high-capacity battery beneath the fl oor. A big part of the e-tron’s appeal is that it doesn’t look too out of the ordinary. Slightly larger than an Audi Q5, the e-tron feels especially refi ned to drive. It is available with the choice of two battery sizes, the larger of which is a 95kW unit that off ers up to 400 kilometres of driving range. With 408hp it isn’t slow and, with the capability to charge at up to 150kW, the e-tron can recharge to 80 per cent capacity in 30 minutes. A less powerful 313hp version, called the e-tron 50, is joining the range using a smaller 71kWh battery that is good for 300 kilometres of range and off ers 120kW charging rates, while its lower retail price will help make the e-tron more aff ordable.
