Citroën C4 Spacetourer MPVs might have fallen out of fashion in favour of seven-seat SUVs, but for unparalleled family-carrying capacity, there really is no substitute for a good people carrier – and the Citroën Grand C4 Spacetourer is one of the fi nest. You can have it without the ‘Grand’ epithet and with just fi ve seats onboard, and that’s fi ne, but it’s at its best as the full seven-seat vehicle. Smooth engines, impressive refi nement and a cultured

ride make it a serene machine to travel in, while the design of its interior is second-to- none – individually sliding chairs to maximise space, huge cubby holes everywhere, little touches like a secondary, smaller rear-view mirror to keep an eye on the kids in the back… it’s a genius creation. Pair the 1.5-litre BlueHDi 130 engine with the seamless automatic gearbox and you’ll have an MPV that will slot faultlessly into your hectic family life.

Citroën C3 Citroën C1
Recently, several manufacturers have dropped city car models from their ranges, citing limited sales. Citroën’s C1 remains a fi xture, though just one version of it is sold in Ireland. The fi ve-door C1 gets an 85hp 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. It might not sound like a great deal of power, but it’s worth remembering that the C1 is as light as it is small, so it feels reasonably nippy in town. The C1 can keep up at motorway speeds too, though it is better suited to those that stick to town driving. The C1 falls into one of the lower motor tax bands and can be economical to run. Don’t expect a great deal of plushness from the basic interior, though you will be able to keep connected with a seven-inch touchscreen display that features smartphone mirroring.

The Citroën C3 has an appealing design that is partly crossover in appearance, especially if you opt for one of the higher specifi cation grades. It apes the look of larger models in the range, where the C3’s face includes sleek LED daytime running lights and a lower main headlight unit. Oddly, the useful ‘Airbump’ strip along the bottom of the doors isn’t standard and without them, it looks as if they’ve fallen off . You’ll need to go to the Flair trim grade to get them. Buyers can choose from a variety of vibrant colours with contrasting roof paint, while inside there’s scope to add some fl air to the interior too. In comparison to rivals like the Ford Fiesta, the C3’s handling isn’t particularly sharp, though it is comfortable. The more powerful PureTech 110 engine is the better choice, although you can only have it with an automatic transmission and in the highest Flair trim level.
