OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Qashqai 1.3 SV DCT

Nissan Qashqai

While there are earlier pretenders to the crossover crown, it was the fi rst Nissan Qashqai of 2006 that started the boom in these vehicles, by popularising the idea of hatchback underpinnings with an SUV-like body. The second generation came out in 2013 and has been facelifted since, as well as given new engines – there’s a 140hp 1.33-litre turbo petrol unit, and then two diesels: a 115hp 1.5-litre

engine and a 150hp 1.7-litre mill. To be fair, the Qashqai Mk2 does nothing spectacularly well… but it does everything to a high enough standard that it’s easy to comprehend why this is such a big-selling, important car in the wider automotive world. As long as you don’t go into the ownership experience of a Qashqai expecting excitement, you’ll be more than happy with this family chariot.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE X-Trail 1.7 dCi SVE 4x4 (seven seats)

Nissan Micra

The fi fth-generation Nissan Micra is a gamechanger – an oft-overused word and, in this instance, we’re not talking about it toppling everything in the supermini class in which it competes; rather, we’re simply saying that the Micra, which had atrophied into a terrible also-ran of a car through the Mk3 and Mk4 models, burst back into life with this sharply- styled fi fth take. An update at the start of 2019 saw the wheezy 0.9-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol replaced by a 100hp/144Nm 1.0-litre unit, and this is the sole choice today. Luckily, it’s a great motor, and there’s an automatic option. Throw in a funky, well-equipped cabin and more than decent driving manners, and the Micra deserves to take on the best in this segment – like the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo.

Nissan X-Trail

The bigger X-Trail has had to follow the Qashqai’s lead. Despite being an older model than its sibling (the X-Trail launched in 2000 and is now into its third generation, which appeared in 2013) it has been styled to look like a larger version of the Qashqai. And that’s how to best think of the X-Trail: it’s kind of a Qashqai Long-Wheelbase, the model that can have seven seats inside and which off ers a bit more of an off -roading bent. It gets just the 1.33-litre petrol (now with 160hp) or the 1.7-litre dCi turbodiesel (150hp), in a pared-down range that has plenty of 4x4 options if you need it to do genuine work in slippery conditions. At its best as a seven-seat, the X-Trail is a no-nonsense option in the SUV marketplace.
