Toyota Prius+


Most hybrid cars currently on sale are either small hatchbacks or, at best, mid-size SUVs. But few can off er a proper seven-seat setup like the Toyota Prius+. The Prius+ was developed off the back of what is now the previous generation Prius model, and this shows in the cabin, which isn’t as stylish. That said, it does seem well put together, and as seven-seaters go, there is an adequate amount of space for all passengers. For those seeking cost-effi cient driving without turning to diesel, the Prius+ covers several bases, and even the better-equipped Luxury model costs less than many other seven-seat SUVs. Its 1.8-litre petrol engine and e-CVT hybrid setup is a proven combination and generally has an excellent reliability rating. Few other models outside of the SUV world promise as much space with potentially such low running costs, making this one family car worthy of your consideration.

Toyota Camry


Back after a hiatus of 15 years, the Toyota Camry is related to the plusher Lexus ES saloon and it is reintroduced to Ireland to replace the now-discontinued Avensis saloon. The Camry uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with electric augmentation to deliver 218hp, 0-100km/h in 8.3 seconds, 5.5 litres/100km fuel consumption and emissions of just 101g/km, placing it in Band A3 (€190 per annum) for road tax. With just the one drivetrain – that hybrid unit linked up to the e-CVT automatic gearbox – all you can choose with the Camry is whether to go for the plain Hybrid, the mid-range Sol or the upmarket Platinum model. Whichever one you choose, you get a supremely comfortable and quiet car that features a huge high-quality cabin, whose only black marks are behind-the-times infotainment and a lack of real driving enjoyment.

Toyota Supra

Another example of Toyota’s platform-sharing nous delivering the sporty-car goods. The Supra is the result of a collaboration with BMW (which makes pretty much the same vehicle as a roadster called the Z4 M40i), and while US Toyota fans have been whingeing about the amount of German content in the new Supra (mainly because BMW doesn’t have the best reputation for reliability over in the States, whereas Toyota does), over here in Europe we have no such qualms. Without the BMW tie-up, the Supra could not have been revived after an absence of 17 years since the Mk4’s demise in 2002. And it’s a corking car: rear-wheel drive, powered by a 340hp turbocharged straight-six and with attention-grabbing looks, the Supra Mk5 is a wonderful thing. It’s not cheap, at more than €80,000, but it is brilliant and we’re very glad it’s back – too much BMW input or not.
