Porsche 911 Porsche’s icon is the 911, which has been around for a staggering 56 years and eight generations. It is as it ever was, though, with a rear-mounted engine, that oh-so-familiar teardrop shape and the sort of performance that will embarrass supercars – yet it retains all the day-to-day civility you’d expect of a 911. The ‘992’ generation, which is the current line-up, is in its infancy at the moment, so there are no out-and-out high-

performance derivatives… which sounds daft when the Carrera 4S has 450hp, can hit 100km/h from rest in 3.4 seconds and will go on to more than 300km/h fl at out. What marks the 992-generation 911 out as truly brilliant, though, is its show-stopping interior; full of tech and wonderful to operate, this is the cabin the 911’s sensational chassis has always deserved. And the Cabriolet drives as sweetly as the Coupe.

Porsche Cayenne
When Porsche diversifi ed into the world of SUVs with the fi rst Cayenne, there was uproar. Now that it has evolved into its third generation, which is actually a very handsome premium SUV, and has saved Porsche as a company in the process (allowing it to become the profi t-making behemoth it is today), there’s less opprobrium to the Cayenne. As a Mk3, it comes as a fi ve-seat model only, although you can choose between the regular Cayenne and the sportier- looking Cayenne Coupe. There are no diesel powertrains to choose from here, only a variety of very powerful petrol engines and petrol-electric hybrids. And we think it’s one of the latter that off ers the best Cayenne experience – the E-Hybrid model has 462hp and staggering performance, yet it’ll do 44km in zero-emissions silence, while its emissions of 72-78g/ km mean it is in Band A1 (€170 per annum) for road tax

One of Porsche’s best-selling models in Ireland is the Panamera. In its current second- generation guise, the look and style of the Panamera are far more like the four-door 911 it aspires to be. Like the 911, there is a dizzying array of diff erent versions available. It starts with the basic 330hp Panamera 4 before ending with the ballistic 680hp Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, which, as you may have guessed, is the plug-in hybrid version that, interestingly, has the second-lowest emissions in the Panamera range. The Panamera GTS lies somewhere in the middle of the performance spectrum and features sportier styling options. Irrespective of which model you choose, the Panamera delivers excellent build quality in its interior and a thoroughly involving driving experience. As an extension to the range, the Sport Turismo model is an estate model that boots cargo capacity.
