Opel Astra

The C-segment or hatchback segment of the market has some excellent cars currently on sale, and although often overlooked, the Opel Astra is one that we rate very highly. The model came in for some quite signifi cant improvements late in 2019 that saw the introduction of new engines, subtle styling tweaks and aerodynamic enhancements to give it even better fuel economy. If there’s one main criticism we would level at the Astra is that its overall design,

especially that of the interior, is a touch dull. A revised engine range contains three 1.2- and 1.4-litre petrol options and two 1.5-litre diesels. A ‘stepless’ automatic is available with the1.4 petrol and, while it is a CVT by another name, it does work exceptionally well for this type of automatic transmission. The rest of the drive leaves little cause for complaint either. Should you need more space than what’s available in the fi ve-door hatch, there is also an estate model.

Opel Corsa

Following the demise of the Karl city car, the Corsa is now once again the smallest car in Opel’s range. An entirely new model arrives in 2020, which shares much of its underpinnings with the Peugeot 208 of its parent company. The Corsa now has a more mature look, coming solely as a fi ve-door hatchback, and features a signifi cant improvement to the interior design with items like a digital instrument display and wireless phone charging. Joining the range of fuel-effi cient and low-emission engines will be a fully electric model called the Corsa-e. With a high-capacity battery, users will be able to enjoy a driving range of up to 330 kilometres, and 100kW fast-charging enables it to recharge to 80 per cent capacity in just half an hour. Another plus of the Corsa-e is that it retains the same passenger and boot space as the regular combustion engine models.

Opel Mokka X

Based on an elongated version of an old Opel Corsa fl oor pan, the Opel Mokka X is the middle of three crossover/SUV off erings from the German marque. It was signifi cantly facelifted and had the ‘X’ added to its name in 2016 (it previously went purely by the name of Mokka), in order to tie it in with the newer Crossland X and Grandland X products, and also to make the Mokka X a little more competitive in a tough yet lucrative market sector. However, the Mokka X feels its age and doesn’t drive as sweetly as some rivals, while there’s a limited engine choice – just a 1.6 CDTi 136hp diesel or a 1.4 140hp turbo petrol. You can pair these to either 4x4 or an automatic gearbox (but not both) at Elite trim, yet the Mokka X makes more sense when it’s cheaper to buy as a front-wheel-drive manual.
