Volvo XC40
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE XC40 D3 Automatic R-Design Pro
Volvo has a knack of producing good looking cars these days, and the XC40 is arguably the company’s best work to date. The third SUV in its line-up is not only the smallest, but it’s also the most modern, and it will be available as a fully electric version, called the Recharge, soon. For now, buyers can choose between a 150hp diesel or punchy 163hp petrol engine. Either off ers plenty of performance and while the diesel has lower emissions, it is more expensive to buy. There are several specifi cation grades to choose from and, if you want it looking as cool as it does on the brochure, then you’ll need to spend a fair chunk of change. Just as Volvo has edged further into the premium segment, so too has its prices.

Volvo V40
The V40 hatchback is now the oldest model in the Volvo range, and it’s starting to show its age, especially when you peer inside the cabin. This car shares some underpinnings with the previous Ford Focus, which in its day was a good thing, but it has since been surpassed by almost everything in the C-segment. Both petrol engines come only with automatic transmissions, though the diesel does off er a manual version. When introduced, Volvo put in quite a lot of work into engineering the car and to this day it is still quite a comfortable car that has the build quality of most other premium alternatives. We expect it to be replaced by a newer model in the not too distant future, so unless you are particularly interested in this model, it’s probably best to hold off until a new model arrives that is likely to share elements with the XC40.

Volvo S60
The Volvo S60 is an executive saloon that goes up against established players like the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Its design echoes the rest of the model range, with easily identifi able elements like the ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED daytime running light signature. Further distancing it from the competition is the unusual decision to only sell the S60 with either petrol or plug-in hybrid powertrains. That isn’t ideal for many business users, who rely on diesel power as much for commuting purposes as for accounting. If you can look past that, then you’ll discover that the Volvo is an involving car to drive with excellent levels of comfort and a cabin that remains quiet even at motorway speeds. Its eight-speed automatic shifts though gears eff ortlessly, although some may fi nd the suspension a little on the fi rm side.
