Volvo V60

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE V60 T8 R-Design

Let’s face it; most people should skip buying crossovers and SUVs in favour of estate cars. They pack in just as much space and often have lower emissions and better fuel economy. Volvo is quite the expert when it comes to such vehicles, hence why it launched its mid- sized V60 estate before the S60 saloon variant – the opposite of how the car industry usually does things. The V60 looks fantastic from any angle and, in addition to the usual suite of safety systems that Volvo is renowned for, the V60 is available with two diesel engines or a powerful plug-in hybrid model. With 529 litres of boot space, the V60 has plenty of versatility to suit most lifestyles, and the total volume of the boot can increase to 1,441 litres. Up in the front, there’s Volvo’s excellent infotainment system, and the quality of the materials throughout the rest of the cabin is top-notch.

Volvo XC60

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered

Volvo’s renaissance as a manufacturer came once the Swedish company had left the auspices of Ford, and nowhere is its brilliance more evident than in its SUVs. The mid-sized vehicle is the XC60, designed to take on the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X5, Mercedes GLC and Porsche Macan, and – if we’re honest – the Volvo is nicer than all of these, as long as you don’t need super-sharp driving manners. The company is committed to electrifi cation, but at the time of writing, its B-badged hybrid diesel XC60s are not on sale here, leaving just the pricey T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid model as the sole choice. Luckily, with Polestar Engineering know-how and a 405hp output, this is one mighty quick SUV that is also cheap to run if you employ its electric power on a regular basis. You also get a stunning cabin and the XC60’s sense of cool.
