BMW 8 Series Coupe/Convertible/Gran Coupe The 8 Series replaced the BMW 6 Series (except for the Gran Turismo), but as the higher number suggests, it’s positioned higher up the automotive ladder – with pricing to match. Still, all versions of the 8 Series look special and quite diff erent to the rest of the BMW line- up, which justifi es that. The Coupe and Convertible are great, but the 8 Series Gran Coupe is undoubtedly our choice of the range. It gets a longer wheelbase to accommodate an extra pair of doors and better rear legroom. Sure, the Coupe is more agile, but we suspect few buyers will truly extend these cars to their limits. The Convertible is less spacious in the back and in the boot, but drives well despite an increase in weight, while the high-performance M8 models are claimed to be the fastest production cars BMW has ever made. The M850i xDrive isn’t far behind, but the 840d diesel is the rational pick of the range, mixing serious performance by any measure with palatable fuel economy.
