Mitsubishi IS SOMETHING MISSING?
The Mitsubishi Space Star city car has been revamped for 2020, but we’ve not had a chance to drive it as yet.
Mitsubishi ASX
Mitsubishi’s compact, front-wheel-drive crossover is called the ASX and it has been around since 2010 – during which time, it has had no fewer than four facelifts and several diff erent drivetrains. The latest updates, which came into play in 2019, have improved the Japanese product, as it now has a more advanced eight-inch touchscreen for the infotainment, which supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. design also helps the ASX look pretty tidy, although it has always been a crossover that provides a reliable, aff ordable and well-equipped alternative to the mainstream, rather than one that drives superbly. Just two petrol engine choices are off ered, a 115hp 1.6-litre with a fi ve-speed manual and a more potent 2.0-litre with 150hp and a CVT auto. The latter is the one to go for, although don’t expect much in the way of either fi reworks or refi nement from this drivetrain.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
The Eclipse Cross slots into the middle of the Mitsubishi range, sitting above the ASX and below the Outlander. It features edgy styling that is more modern than we’re used to seeing from the Japanese brand, with a sloping roofl ine akin to sportier SUV coupes like the BMW X4. The Mitsubishi’s fi ve-seat layout provides adequate passenger space with a rear bench that can slide forward by up to 20 centimetres. However, this does have an impact on the boot capacity, which, at 448 litres, lags behind many rivals. A petrol-only off ering may be seen as forward-thinking by Mitsubishi, but the 1.5-litre engine is only available with front-wheel drive, and it has high emissions making it more costly to tax. Its manual gearbox isn’t especially refi ned, and the automatic CVT isn’t a great deal better.
Mitsubishi L200
Mitsubishi has good form when it comes to making rugged and tough pickups, and the new L200 is no diff erent. A thorough reworking of the model introduces bolder styling and a higher level of quality inside the cabin. A new engine ensures it meets all the latest emission regulations, but, as a result, power output is slightly down on its predecessor, though torque increases. In addition to several driver assistance functions for on- and off -road driving, the L200 features a robust and capable all-wheel-drive transmission. The load bed is capable of up to a 1,080kg load, while its braked towing capacity is up to 3,100kg. Even with all this mechanical hardware beneath you the L200 still manages to be quite civilised on the road, at least for a pickup, and it features one of the tightest turning circles in the segment.
