OUR PICK OF THE RANGE C 200 hybrid AMG Line
Mercedes-Benz C-Class A combination of classy styling, decent specifi cation grades and a wide choice of engines has kept the Mercedes C-Class at the sharp end of the premium executive saloon segment for years in Ireland. It still looks as good today as the day it was launched, and the performance-themed AMG Line underlines this. A variety of upmarket materials and fancy ambient lighting make it feel more special inside, though its chief rivals, the Audi A4 and

BMW 3 Series, are every bit as good. The estate version of the C-Class is every bit as stylish and off ers lots of cargo-swallowing capacity in addition to roof rails. A variety of engines provides a wide range of choice and include mild hybrid and soon plug-in hybrid versions, in addition to the regular diesel and petrol power units. Three Mercedes- AMG versions turn up the performance wick between 390- and 510hp, which gives the C-Class a very diff erent character.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class Mercedes-Benz CLA
In its fi rst generation, the CLA didn’t have the most elegant of proportions given its supposed ‘four-door coupe’ status. This new model is far more attractive, although it isn’t radically diff erent from the A-Class Saloon - a model that didn’t previously exist in the market. The CLA is a little longer, lower and wider than the A-Class Saloon, and it’s also that little bit sweeter to drive thanks in part to its chassis setup and wider track. Of the variety of engines available, it is the more powerful version of the 1.33-litre petrol that suits it best, and the nine-speed automatic transmission is a joy to experience. If you’re chasing higher performance, you can have a CLA that has undergone the AMG treatment, coming as either the 306hp CLA 35 or the 421hp CLA 45. To add even further choice, Mercedes off ers the CLA as a Shooting Brake ‘estate’ too.

Coupe/Cabriolet There’s an elegance to the design of the Mercedes C-Class Coupe that sets it apart from others like the BMW 4 Series and Lexus RC. Its frameless doors and sloping roof make it look quite diff erent to the saloon it is based on and, for those that enjoy wind-in-the-hair motoring, there is a soft-top cabriolet version. Given how chilly it can get in Ireland, buyers will appreciate the convenient neck warmers incorporated into the backrests of the front seats. If a rain shower does come along, the fabric roof can be raised in just 20 seconds and while on the move at up to 50km/h. A 1.5-litre mild hybrid petrol engine off ers adequate performance for the average buyer, though AMG also off ers three higher- performance models in both body styles.
