Peugeot 508 Another modern Peugeot that looks as if it should be sitting in a pristine motor show hall somewhere, rather than battering up and down the M8 to Cork. Where the Mk1 508 (2010-2017) was a blobby, somewhat mundane aff air, the 2018-launched Mk2 is an absolute stunner. It’s also clever as a ‘four-door’, because while it looks like a saloon, it’s actually a very large ‘liftback’ with a hidden tailgate. Having said that, if you need even more practicality, the gorgeous 508 SW estate is the one to go for. Engines are 1.5-, 1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and diesel units, with anything between 130- and 225hp; more than enough to shift the elegant 508 around easily. A plug-in hybrid derivative is due in for 2020, which will only make one of the strongest cars in the D-segment even stronger.

Peugeot Rifter
In a bid to distance it from its light commercial vehicle origins, the Peugeot Rifter gains some chunky bodywork cladding to add a more SUV-like vibe to its exterior styling. You can choose between two vehicle lengths, which off er fi ve or seven seats, though if you’re choosing seven, we’d recommend picking the longer of the two. Usefully, each of the rear seats can be adjusted independently. Should you need to, all can be removed to transform the Rifter into a van. We prefer the 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, but being sensible, if you frequently drive will the full complement of passengers or fi ll it to the brim with luggage, then the higher pulling power of the 1.5-litre diesel will better serve you. Either way, the Rifter makes for a great and smart alternative to an SUV or crossover as a family car, even if it might not have the same amount of kerbside appeal.
Peugeot 3008
It’s easy to see how the Peugeot 3008 has quickly become one of the brand’s most successful models. With the SUV segment being as much about design and desirability as off -road ability, the 3008 sits head and shoulders above much of the competition. Even though the cabin doesn’t look or seem as capacious as some competitors’, there is little to fault it on. The driver-centric dashboard includes a digital instrument display and modern touchscreen system, while the piano key buttons make it stand out from the rest. A familiar trait of Peugeot cars is a very small steering wheel and this, combined with light steering, creates an added sense of agility for the 3008, especially when driving in busy city streets. The engine off ering of both petrol and diesel power units will expand in 2020 with the introduction of a plug-in hybrid model featuring a 300hp output, 59-kilometre EV range and emissions of 29g/km.
