The Mercedes GLA will be replaced by an all-new model in 2020. At the time of writing, we’ve not yet been shown what it looks like.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE CLS 350d AMG Line

Mercedes-Benz CLS The Mercedes CLS is a sportier and sleeker alternative to the E-Class, which lies just below it in the model range. It doesn’t have quite as much competition, namely the Audi A7 and BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe. Those more coupe-like proportions don’t detract from the interior passenger space and even in the rear of the CLS, passenger comfort is very good. The CLS range starts with a 2.0-litre diesel that off ers ample performance and, when paired with the sporty AMG Line styling pack, looks every bit the part. If you’re less concerned about high motor tax rates, there is a larger 3.0-litre diesel engine, which transforms the CLS into an excellent long-distance cruiser, while there are also two petrol engines of similar sizes. An AMG CLS 53 4Matic crowns the range with a 435hp power output and all-wheel-drive transmission.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE GLE 300 d AMG Line

Mercedes-Benz GLC

Of the extensive off ering of SUVs from Mercedes in Ireland, it is the mid-size GLC that has the broadest appeal. This occupies the same segment as other models like the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60. A recent update in 2019 gave the styling a slight refresh with some minor enhancements to the already excellent interior, namely a new steering wheel and the upgraded MBUX infotainment system. New diesel engines provide higher levels of refi nement; however, there isn’t the same level of choice with the petrol off erings, which only come with all-wheel-drive transmissions. A Coupe version of the GLC diff ers only in its appearance and by having slightly less boot space, though it is every bit as lovely to drive. Buyers can also choose to have dedicated Mercedes-AMG variants of both the GLC and GLC Coupe, each served up with twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol engines.

Mercedes-Benz GLE

Mercedes’ GLE is into its fourth generation now, managing to trace its lineage back through the M-Class and ML models of the past – something that the GLE evokes with its forward-raked C-pillar design fl ourish – but the nameplate is relatively new, coming into being on the previous generation car near the end of its life. It uses ‘G’ to reference the G-Wagen boxy off - roader, and ‘E’ to tie this in with the E-Class, as that is where the GLE is seen in terms of SUV prestige. It’s a smooth, quiet, urbane operator, the Merc, with its character tilted more towards comfort than any handling prowess, but a good selection of engines and the option of a Coupe model provide plenty of variety. It’s hard to look beyond the 245hp four-cylinder 300 d as the pick of the bunch, though, as its relatively frugal engine has plenty of punch.
