Citroën C3 Aircross

There is no shortage of choice within the compact crossover market, so Citroën has ensured that its C3 Aircross stands out from the crowd with what is a chunky and funky design. It doesn’t get the brand’s Airbumps, but it does feature rugged cladding and the option to add contrasting roof paint and an innovative C-pillar decoration that is impregnated in the panel. It can be just as colourful inside the cabin, where design and comfort are brought to the fore. Among its rivals, the C3 Aircross delivers a fun driving experience with the choice of a peppy petrol engine or a very economical diesel for those undertaking longer journeys more regularly.

Citroën introduced a more mature design, but also chose to slightly reposition it away from a crossover and into the highly competitive hatchback segment - to go up against

established players like the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. To give it an edge, Citroën is championing comfort by fi tting its ‘Progressive Hydraulic Cushion’ suspension. In theory, it’s softer without having an overly negative eff ect on handling - something Citroën has previous form in doing. For the most part, it works, although some people may fi nd it a little too soft. The above-average-sized seats up front feel more like armchairs, making this an excellent car for longer distances. If that’s you then the BlueHDi 100 engine should prove frugal, but if you’re an urbanite, sticking with either of the PureTech petrol engines is a wiser move.

Citroën C5 Aircross

The Citroën C5 Aircross has been a latecomer to the SUV party, but it’s fashionably late in this case as it features a striking design and approach that puts comfort as a priority. The use of Citroën’s plush Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension and some very comfortable seats are two big positives for the C5 Aircross. Going against it though is the fact that Citroën is only off ering this car as a fi ve-seater when many of its rivals off er seven seats. But if you can live with that, then it’s worth exploring how well the C5 Aircross drives. One other feature that’s missing is the lack of an all-wheel- drive transmission. In Citroën’s defence, it does off er a Grip Control function that adjusts the traction control to optimise traction in slippery conditions. There’s a good spread of petrol and diesel engines, and the optional eight-speed automatic is a box worth ticking if you can.
