Subaru XV Of all the models in the Subaru model range, the XV has the most appeal, not only for its crossover styling, but also for it being quite capable of tackling more demanding terrain should the need arise. Its proven all-wheel- drive system makes light work of poorer conditions to give an added layer of security when driving. The cabin has a functional and robust design, and the material quality

throughout is improved in comparison to the company’s previous models. Subaru’s SE Premium specification adds leather upholstery, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and satellite navigation in addition to smartphone connectivity. For 2020 the XV will also gain new hybrid tech that should bring gains in fuel economy and emissions - something that hasn’t always been Subaru’s strong point.

Lots of manufacturers must share platforms now to ensure certain models make viable financial sense. Toyota is a devil for this: it paired up with PSA to create the Aygo city car, alongside the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108; and it has recently teamed up with BMW to create the Supra and Z4. And, in between these two projects, the Japanese giant collaborated with Subaru on the GT86 and this car, the BRZ. The Subaru version uses the same mechanicals as the Toyota, with a boxer-four non-turbo engine being a hallmark of this brand, while its rear-driven coupe format makes it an entertaining car to drive, if a little hard work due to its relative lack of torque. The BRZ is a brilliant, affordable performance car but, weirdly, the Toyota GT86 outsells the almost-identical BRZ by about seven-to-one. Go figure.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Forester e-Boxer ES
Once it enjoyed the same cult-like status as the Impreza, but over the years and subsequent model generations the Subaru Forester has been tamed down, looking more like a conventional family-sized SUV nowadays. The latest model shouldn’t be written off so quickly though, as it offers decent levels of space inside and comes equipped with an excellent all-wheel- drive transmission to bolster its surefooted drive. Further helping the drive is Subaru’s Eyesight safety system that helps monitor its surroundings while driving and can watch over the driver to detect drowsiness or audibly warn you if it detects you’re not looking at the road. Subaru will add its hybrid tech to the Forester this year, and that should help to reduce fuel consumption.
