OUR PICK OF THE RANGE e-Niro

Kia Niro

The Kia Niro fi rst arrived as a conventional hybrid, but now that has been surpassed with the launch of plug-in hybrid and fully electric variants. Other than some subtle exterior diff erences, there is very little to separate the two visually. In the plug-in hybrid, you get a battery driving range of up to 65 kilometres in city driving conditions. Once that is depleted, the 1.6-litre petrol engine kicks in. Meanwhile, the fully electric e-Niro gets a 64kWh battery that powers a 204hp electric motor. The driving range of up to 455 kilometres makes it one of the best of any electric car currently on sale. Thanks to its 150kW fast charging capability, the battery can be topped up to 80 per cent in around 40 minutes. Its raised crossover driving position and spacious interior, along with a boot capacity of 451 litres, make it a great choice for small families too.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Optima K3

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Sorento 2.2 CRDi 6MT 4WD K3

Kia Sorento

There are few seven-seat SUVs available, at any price, that are more pleasant and likeable than the Sorento. Launched in its third-generation guise in 2015, it’s a truly quality item throughout, with a minor update in 2018 bringing in subtly massaged looks and additional equipment. Just one 2.2-litre CRDi turbodiesel engine is off ered in the range. The base K1 spec comes with 4WD but fi ve seats only, so it’s best avoided, while the K2 mid-spec gets a full complement of seats, but is rendered solely as a two-wheel-drive variant. So, it’s to the top of the tree you must go, where the 4WD K3 spec gives you the fi nest Sorento package you can get. Supremely comfortable to ride in and drive, this Kia SUV is one of our favourite family machines on the market.

54 Auto Ireland Guide to New Cars 2020 Kia Optima

In the saloon segment, the Kia Optima ranks at the higher end of the scale in terms of passenger space and also boot capacity, at 510 litres. The seven-year warranty bolsters the appeal of its stylish design. Although it is only available with a 1.6-litre diesel engine, it is reasonably economical to run. If you opt for the higher K3 specifi cation, it comes with a seven-speed automatic transmission as standard, which now has lower emissions than before, resulting in a more aff ordable annual motor tax band. A full leather interior is joined by a seven-inch touchscreen display and lane keep assist, but there isn’t quite as much technology available as some of its newer rivals. Indeed, this could be the last year of sales for the Optima in Ireland.
