BMW X1
The BMW X1 underwent a raft of modest updates just in time for the ‘201’ registration period, including a refresh of the exterior styling and addition of more modern infotainment systems inside. Despite its naming, the X1 is actually more spacious than the BMW X2, and it’s big enough for those with no more than two kids to use as the main family vehicle. It drives well, as you’d expect, though most are likely to buy it for its image, high driving position and strong resale values. Hence, it’s probably best to stick with a low-powered diesel engine, as in the X1 sDrive18d or, if you don’t rack up high annual mileages, a low- powered petrol model, such as the X1 sDrive18i. Saying all that, we prefer the X1 with xDrive four-wheel drive. Watch out for a new plug-in hybrid version arriving later in 2020.

LClass BMW X2
If the X1 and X3 and just a bit too plain for your liking, then the BMW X2 ought to pique your interest. Appearing more like a jacked-up hatchback than full-on SUV, the X2 is something that BMW calls an SAC (Sports Activity Coupe). The best way to showcase the distinctive styling is when you opt for the higher specifi cations that add contrasting cladding to the bodywork. That crosses over to the interior as well, where some interesting materials are available. You can choose to have power sent to the front or all four wheels, though the X2 drives and handles more like a sporty road car than a tall crossover. Backing this is up is the exceptionally fun 306hp X2 M35i range-topper.

BMW X3
The X3 has evolved into what is now quite a complete package in BMW’s SUV range and is a strong rival for the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. A streamlining of the model line-up has reduced the engine choices available, but there are still diesel and petrol power units, and all come exclusively with automatic all-wheel-drive transmissions. The X3 hasn’t escaped the clutches of the M division, though, as the X3 M Competition model pumps out 510hp. If you’re happy with something a little tamer, there’s also the 360hp X3 M40i. Irrespective of which one you choose the X3 ranks as one of the best premium SUVs on sale right now.
