Lexus LC

People sometimes describe cars as works of art, and this is very much the case with the Lexus LC. This stunning luxury 2+2 coupe has striking proportions with some intricate details such as the mesh-like grille. Behind that lies a 3.5-litre petrol V6 with a hybrid system that drives the rear wheels via a ten-speed automatic transmission. It is more GT than a sports car, and its interior is nothing short

of exquisite. Only a fi ddly infotainment system and touchpad control let it down, but it’s easily forgivable considering how enjoyable this Lexus is to drive. The quality of the cabin is just what you would expect from a real luxury car and has some lovely details such as asymmetric door cards. If you’re looking for an exceptional vehicle that is something of a rarity on the road, look no further.

Lexus CT

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE CT 200h Executive

The appeal of the Lexus CT is that it’s a premium hatchback – to rival the likes of the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, Mercedes A-Class and Volvo V40 – but it’s a hybrid, so it’s very cheap to tax and run. However, it’s not the fi nest car in

its class, by some distance. It uses the same 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol-electric drivetrain as an older Toyota Prius (the CT launched in 2011) and, while it’s frugal, it is a long way from refi ned. The engine note is coarse and the CVT gearbox allows it to become very noisy if you need anything like maximum power from the Lexus, all of which adds up to a non- premium driving experience. Factor in unusual, cluttered cabin fi nishing and a frustrating infotainment interface experience, and you’ve got to really need the CT’s tax-friendly cash-savings to pick this over its rivals.

Lexus NX

Lexus likes to diff erentiate itself from the crowd, and the NX is no diff erent. Looking more like a scalpel was used to style it than a pen, the sharp lines and vast grille give the fi ve-seat SUV a very distinctive and striking appearance. Things get a little more conventional once you’re inside, and you will fi nd high-quality materials that are a match for off erings made by rivals like Audi and BMW. The rear passenger space isn’t inadequate, although the 475 litres of boot capacity does lag behind most of the competition in this segment. Lexus serves up the NX with the choice of front- or all-wheel-drive and a solitary 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. Providing you aren’t expecting rapid performance, the hybrid system provides reasonable levels of refi nement and smooth power delivery thanks to its automatic transmission. It performs best in towns and urban diving where it can spend up to half of its time using only battery power. Another upside is that it doesn’t require plugging in.
