Toyota C-HR
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE C-HR Sport
The C-HR marked a turning point for Toyota design, and the striking crossover has been an instant hit for the brand. It was one of the fi rst models not to be sold with the option of a diesel engine and has recently undergone a mid-cycle facelift. The C-HR is now only sold as a hybrid, with either a 1.8- or 2.0-litre engine. Due to its coupe-like roofl ine and raised window line towards the rear, it can feel dark and a bit claustrophobic when sitting in the back, which isn’t ideal for smaller kids. It also doesn’t have as much boot space as many of its rivals; at 377 litres it’s even less than in many C-segment hatchbacks. But where the Toyota makes up for things is with its fuel economy thanks to the hybrid powertrain. As long as you aren’t trying to extract every last bit of power from the engine, this Toyota makes decent and smooth progress. It excels in urban settings where it can spend up to half its time being powered solely by its battery.
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE RAV4 Hybrid AWD-i Luna
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Hilux SR5 Double Cab
RChoiceecommended Editor’s Toyota RAV4
As with many of the other models in the Toyota range, the RAV4 is now a hybrid-only model. There’s isn’t a plug-in variant of this, so buyers don’t have to consider any charging scenarios. For a good deal of time during city and urban driving the RAV4 trundles along using only its electric motor. The battery in the rear of the car recharges quickly and is almost always ready to deploy energy when asked of it. Even at higher speeds, the engine will occasionally shut off for short periods to help reduce consumption and emissions. As the driver you don’t need to do anything, the car manages everything. To match its tough and rugged looks, it is possible to have an all-wheel-drive transmission in the RAV4, even with a hybrid. Naturally, it would be expected for this option to drive up fuel consumption rates, though it barely makes any diff erence overall, which is a plus in our book.
104Auto Ireland Guide to New Cars 2020 Toyota Hilux
No other pickup on sale enjoys the same legendary status as the Toyota Hilux. It has deservedly become the benchmark for the segment and has been engineered to cope with quite literally anything in virtually any environment, so whatever can be thrown at it in Ireland is unlikely to trouble it too much. It is possible to order the entry-level model as a single cab, though most will prefer the more practical double cab version, of which there are three specifi cation grades to choose from. All models come with the venerable 2.4-litre diesel engine, while the two upper tier models are available with an automatic six-speed transmission. Even in its top-spec the Hilux remains a workhorse, so you shouldn’t expect a plush interior or refi nement like in an SUV, but when it comes to getting work done, on- or off -road, you can bank on the Hilux being up to the task at hand.
