OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Civic 1.5 VTEC Turbo S Design

RChoiceecommended Editor’s

Honda Civic Honda threw a third of its R&D budget at the development of the tenth generation of the venerable Civic ahead of the car’s launch in 2017, and it shows. This is a huge improvement on its predecessors and, some strange cabin ergonomics and unreadable displays within aside, it’s one of the best cars in the C-segment. It comes in fi ve-door hatch and four-door saloon guises, with an entirely turbocharged range of engines.

IS SOMETHING MISSING?

An all-new Honda Jazz is coming in 2020.

A 1.0-litre three-cylinder VTEC Turbo provides the entry point, although the 1.5-litre, 182hp four-cylinder unit is probably a better all-rounder. Honda added a 1.6-litre i-DTEC turbodiesel in 2018, which is one of the fi nest engines of its type, but the performance star of the range is the Civic Type R – a 2.0-litre, 320hp hot hatch with wild bodywork and a stunning chassis. It’s a great car across the board, the Civic Mk10.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE CR-V 2.0 Hybrid 4WD Lifestyle

Honda CR-V Honda’s shift to a mostly petrol range includes its fl agship SUV, the CR-V. Available as either a fi ve- or seven-seat car, the CR-V also off ers buyers the choice of front- or all-wheel drive. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is smooth, quiet and reasonably economical considering the size of the car it is powering. Better again is the hybrid model that puts a smart powertrain setup to good use. It’s capable of battery-only driving over very short distances, and then the engine can be used to power the electric motor rather than the wheels when in hybrid mode. For other times the engine sends power to the wheels, and the overall result is a quiet and refi ned drive - if you mostly drive on slower roads. There are also numerous driver assistance systems as part of Honda’s ‘Sensing’ safety suites, such as adaptive cruise control and a speed limiter that recognises road signs and adjusts to the posted speed limit.
